Ministers continuing swimming fitness drive

The government is continuing to encourage people to enjoy the benefits of family swimming exercise through its ongoing Swim4Life scheme.

Health secretary Andy Burnham believes the sport offers a fun and effective way for people to get more active and recently promoted its benefits by taking part in the Great North Swim at Lake Windermere.

As part of the broader Change4Life campaign, the Swim4Life scheme aims to raise awareness of the health benefits swimming can offer families.

Mr Burnham commented: "Swimming is a brilliant way for everybody to get active and for kids to get their 60 active minutes a day - they can burn off energy without even really noticing.

"It's great for older adults and those with mobility problems as well."

People working as swimming fitness instructors were last week told that the energy firm British Gas has also launched a new swimming scheme, encouraging its customers to enjoy a free family session at a local pool.
