Govt hails success of free swimming scheme
The government has highlighted the recent success of its free swimming scheme following the release of positive second quarter figures.Offering free swimming to people over the age of 60 and those who are 16 or under, the initiative saw 5.9 million free swimming sessions between July and September, official statistics suggest.
Secretary for culture, media and sport Ben Bradshaw believes the scheme has inspired a number of people to enjoy the benefits of swimming.
He said: "More than ten million free swims so far - 5.9 million in the last quarter, including a hugely successful August - is testament to how this scheme is tapping into a desire among people, young and old, to get active."
Mr Bradshaw added that increasing numbers of councils have been looking to join the initiative, news which could benefit fitness instructors and those in related leisure jobs.
Launched in April, the government's free swimming scheme aims to improve the health of people ahead of the 2012 London Olympic Games.
