Employers to be awarded recruitment subsidies

UK employers offering careers in leisure industries may soon benefit from a government subsidy that pays up to £2,500 towards the recruitment of new starters.

Launched yesterday, the scheme aims to give an incentive to employers willing to take on people who have been out of work for six months or more.

A basic fee of £1,000 will be paid for each new employee, with a further £1,500 available to fund on-the-job training.

The government's secretary of state for work and pensions, James Purnell, says £2 billion is being invested to help people get back into work as quickly as possible.

He commented: "This is just part of a range of measures coming in to give people all the support we can - from CV writing and job searching to skills checks and training opportunities."

New measures have also been taken to offer support to people who want to start their own businesses.

The government's scheme follows the recent announcement that UK unemployment passed the two million mark in March for the first time since 1997.
