Acupuncture therapy set for regulation consultation

A new government consultation is set to look at how a regulatory system could be applied to practitioners of acupuncture, herbal medicines and traditional Chinese medicines.

Launched by the UK's Department of Health, ministers in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have also agreed to make the consultation process nationwide, in a bid to see whether statutory regulations should be put in place.

Those in spa jobs who offer such therapies are now invited to take part in the consultation, to air their views on potential safety standards that could be introduced.

Health minister Ann Keen commented that no matter where people access health treatments such as acupuncture, patient safety is paramount.

She said: "This UK-wide consultation will help us find the best and most appropriate ways of ensuring that those who choose to receive acupuncture, herbal medicine and traditional Chinese medicine can be reassured that those practitioners meet professional standards of care and safety."

The British Acupuncture Council currently aims to ensure high standards of safety and training within the industry, by representing a number of the country's practitioners.
